Lecture Capture Captioning with CaptionSync™ and Echo360

Echo360 offers automated and affordable systems for lecture capture. Lecture capture allows campuses to create learning on-demand with a platform that automatically, affordably, and reliably captures class lectures and converts them into podcasts, video, rich media, and more for anytime, anywhere playback.

AST is an Echo360 partner for accurate, quick turnaround transcription and captioning. When used in conjunction with CaptionSync, the captured lectures are seamlessly captioned and synchronized with classroom visuals and video.

Customer Quote

I just wanted to say on behalf of our organization that CaptionSync has been a huge benefit for us already. Timecoding that used to take us four days via manual tools now takes four minutes, and the output is just as good as our old manual processes. We're really happy with this tool.

Using CaptionSync with your Echo System

The CaptionSync workflow is fully integrated into your Echo system (version 2.4 and later). Getting your Echo lectures captioned requires just a small amount of configuration and then everything happens automatically. You can configure your Echo system to automatically caption lectures immediately after capture, or you can select to caption specific lectures that have been previously captured.

Here are the steps involved:

  1. Apply for a CaptionSync Account. If you do not already have a CaptionSync account, Contact AST to get one set up.
  2. Configure your Echo to work with your CaptionSync Account. See our tutorial video: Launch with QuickTime
  3. Select specific lectures, or entire schedules to be captioned. See our tutorial video: Launch with QuickTime

iTunes/iPod versions

If prefer, we also have iTunes/iPod versions of our tutorial movies available. These movies are formatted for the iPod and both captioned and subtitled. You can turn on either or both captioning and subtitling on your iPod to see how they look. Download these movies and load them into iTunes:

The Value of Captioning Lecture Captures

Lecture capture systems represent an important tool for learners with disabilities. The any-time, any-where nature of lecture playback offers such students the opportunity to access and replay course material on their own terms. Clearly, these benefits are thwarted if the content is not made accessible. Captioning not only provides accessibility to viewers with hearing loss, it also provides substantially improved access for viewers with ESL (English as a Second Language) and learning disabilities. Additionally, captioning data enables sophisticated search and navigation features that all students will benefit from.

Useful Research Papers on Lecture Capture

People working on the Echo product have produced some helpful papers on the use of Lecture Capture, especially in the content of students with disabilities. AST is pleased to provide access to those papers here (with permission):
