Input
Captioning your audio/video content is as simple as logging on to the CaptionSync server and submitting your media file for captioning. We accept many different formats of media files, including:.MP4,.WMV, .WMA, .MOV, .FLV, .RM, .RA, .WAV, .MP3, .M4A, or .M4B.
We need only the audio portion of your content, so if you have video material in other formats (such as MPEG2 or AVI), just save out the audio track as a .MP3 and you are on your way.
If you are providing a transcript file, no fancy formatting is required - just a simple .TXT file is all that is needed.
Output
CaptionSync can generate video caption files much more quickly than is possible with traditional manual
captioning techniques. Content with a transcript takes about 5 minutes; if we need to get the transcript for you, it takes about 2-3 business days (24 hour rush transcription is also available). And of course our automated solution is available around the clock -- whenever you need it!
Standard formats include .SCC, .STL, .SRT, and/or .TXT result files which can used in authoring packages
like Apple's DVD Studio Pro, Sonic's DVDit Pro, Adobe's Encore, or MediaChance's DVD Lab Pro.
In addition to doing captioning for DVDs we can also deliver files for captioning Broadcast Video, Podcasts, Streaming Media (QuickTime, Real, Window Media, and/or Flash), and YouTube at no additional cost.
Additional Benefits
Besides the obvious benefits to viewers with hearing disabilities, captioning also offers a number of additional benefits to all users that should not be overlooked:
- Compliance: The FCC, ADA, and Section 508 require captioning for most broadcast and distributed video content.
- Flexibility: With the increasing popularity of mobile devices, viewers may be in environments where access to the audio is limited. Captioning allows them to view your content whether they are in the library or on a noisy bus.
- Universal Access: design your content from the ground up to be as usable as possible by as many people as possible.
- Improving Comprehension: captioning improves comprehension for all viewers, especially for those with English as a second language.
The CaptionSync Automated Captioning Process
Traditional SD closed captions are encoded in the line-21 VBI. Captions are limited to a 32 character line length and the actual rendering of the captions is controlled by the television set. For broadcast video, this entails encoding captions onto the master tape. This can be accomplished by either a software or hardware encoder, or by AST's Digital NLE Captions (see our Broadcast Video page for more details).
DVDs are much easier. Instead of requiring encoding software or hardware, captions and subtitles are pulled directly into the DVD authoring package. In addition, the formatting of subtitles is much more flexible in terms of font, colors, and size displayed. AST provides caption files that are accepted by numerous DVD authoring packages.
Advanced Features
Using a standard set of markup commands, producers can optionally "mark-up" the text transcript in order to control the exact format, location and content of the captions. This feature allows producers to dictate the font, color, and positioning of any caption, insert music symbols, as well as provide content to appear in the captions that is not found in the audio track.
