Transcription

A transcript is a word-for-word script produced from an audio or video file.  In addition to the narration of dialog, transcripts can include descriptions of sound effects, and speaker information. Many platforms like iTunes U, Blackboard and lecture capture systems allow transcripts to be downloaded and used as study tools.

Why does CaptionSync deliver human-generated transcription instead of speech recognition results?

We have evaluated the use of speech recognition tools for generating transcripts and found the technology is not reliable enough to be able to deliver consistently accurate results.  Even at accuracy rates of up to 80 – 90%, comprehension loss at that level is deemed inadequate by educational institutions for academic materials, and does not satisfy accessibility mandates. Read more about our research. At AST, we hire professional stenographers to generate accurate transcripts.

Our standard transcription service gives you a clean TXT file within 3 business days. We also offer a rush transcription service giving you a clean TXT file within 1 business day.

When you upload material to CaptionSync for transcribing, you can also get your captioning at the same time. As one of our many caption outputs, you can elect to receive a transcript in HTML, a “Browsable Transcript” format that allows you to click any word in the transcript to launch the media file at that precise point. At Carnegie Mellon University, captioned transcripts are linked to the video and can be “unlinked” to allow the user to read ahead.
