Universal Design in Learning Webinar
In partnership with Brightspace™ by D2L and ReadSpeaker, AST presented a webinar to discuss how to improve learning outcomes through the framework of Universal Design for Learning. Because no two students have the same learning styles, it is important that they have equal access to multiple formats of learning materials to suit their styles and disabilities. Closed Captioning and Universal Design
In her book, Sound is Not Enough: Captioning as Universal Design, Svetlana Kouznetsova discusses the challenges she faced as a deaf student in high school with no access to learning materials that met her needs. It is advocates like her who are emphasizing the need for Universal Design in Learning and accessibility in education. Art Morgan describes this important cause in his blog post Closed Captioning As Universal Design.
Higher Education Accessibility Complaints
Among a number of legal actions against the lack of accessibility in higher education, patterns have been identified and addressed one by one in this article from the NC State University IT Accessibility Blog. Each pattern has been drawn from specific lawsuits or complaints, and turned into actionable items that can help improve accessibility for students at universities.

When thinking about accessibility online, you have to understand that it starts with the design of a website. If the framework is built correctly it will be easy to share accessible content. This action based guide for building accessible websites goes through all types of content from video to images to links, to ensure it is all provided in the correct formats for those with disabilities. Necessary actions include closed captioning and transcripts, alt attributes, color choice and header and text structure.
