The first installment of our CaptionSync Whiteboard Wednesday series explains how easy it is to use the CaptionSync Online Caption Editor to preview and perfect your closed captions. Watch it using the CaptionSync Smart Player, or reference the full transcript below.
Hi, this is Courtney with AST, and in this video we’re going to show you some highlights of CaptionSync’s Online Caption Editor.
First let’s review the typical workflow for creating captions with CaptionSync to give you some context on scenarios where the caption editor is really powerful. The process starts with an uncaptioned video that is either on your own computer or in an online video platform. The video is then pushed to CaptionSync, and CaptionSync routes the video to an appropriate professional transcriber. CaptionSync then uses the transcript to create a time-stamped caption file, which gets pushed back to your video platform for use with the original video.
The online caption editor gives you an additional window into the process that takes place in CaptionSync, allowing you to adjust things in the captions before generating a new caption file. Let’s take a look at a few of the features.
One great feature is that you can preview the captions with the video. This is handy if you don’t have easy access to the final video with captions, particularly with broadcast formats. You can also make quick text corrections in the captions, for example if you need to change the spelling of a name, or adjust the timing of a caption, nudging it forward or backward. Finally, you can adjust the positioning of a particular caption. If there is something that is obscured by the captions at the bottom of the screen, you can move the captions to the left, right, or top of the screen. Keep in mind that only a few platforms support alternate caption positioning. Typically this is used for broadcast formats, such as with an SCC file.
