Historically, people with diverse backgrounds have often been underrepresented in film. Underrepresentation in film has been especially true in regards to people with disabilities. At AST, diversity is one of our most important values. It is our belief that people of different backgrounds can and should have the opportunity to participate in media such as film. For this reason, we are strong supporters of the ReelAbilities Film Festival.
Since 2007, the ReelAbilities Film Festival has been held yearly in several cities throughout the US. Its mission is to promote awareness about the lives of people with different disabilities and conditions through film. ReelAbilities hosts various feature and short screenings, post-screening discussions, and other programs in multiple locations every year. In addition to this, ReelAbilities gives others the opportunity to submit films to be screened at their events.
Most importantly, the main goal of ReelAbilities is to use film to bring the community together to foster awareness and celebrate the diversity of the human experience. We are especially impressed by its accessibility services provided to support all types of viewers, services of which include closed captioning, Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART), audio description, Sign Language interpretation, and more.
This year, the upcoming film festival will be held at the following dates and cities:
- Boston, MA – Tuesday March 26, 2019
- New Jersey – Monday April 1st, 2019
- New York – Monday April 1st, 2019
We hope that those of you near the the festival showings will be able to attend, and if you do, we’d like to hear about your experience.
